Kaolin is a common natural mineral, the main component of which is kaolinite, a white or off-white plate-like aluminum silicate. As a chemically stable clay, kaolin has low shrinkage and expansion rates, making it excellent in a wide range of industrial applications such as ceramics, papermaking, glass fiber, fillers, etc.
According to different processing methods, commercially available kaolin mainly includes washed kaolin, calcined kaolin and surface-modified kaolin.
Washed kaolin
Washed kaolin is purified from natural clay through a series of precision processes involving grinding, pulping, screening, fine grinding, centrifugal separation, chemical treatment, magnetic separation, concentration and drying. These processes ensure that the product meets ideal standards in terms of purity, particle size, brightness and residue level. Washed kaolin is a hydrous clay that retains about 14% of the bound water in the original clay, has good plasticity and dispersibility, and is suitable for coatings, rubber, plastics and other industries.
Calcined Kaolin
Calcined kaolin is made from washed kaolin through a high temperature heat treatment (calcination) process. Calcination temperatures are usually 650°C or higher to remove bound water (about 14%) from the clay. Calcination can be done by flash calcination (residence time in seconds) or soak calcination (traditional method with residence time of more than 30 minutes). Soak calciners can be vertical or rotary designs with gravity feed, while flash calciners are usually pneumatically fed. The calcined kaolin is anhydrous, has higher whiteness and electrical insulation properties, and is widely used in cables, rubber, plastics and other fields.
Surface Modified Kaolin
Surface modified kaolin is the coating of calcined kaolin with specific chemicals to enhance its properties. The treatment method can be customized according to the application requirements. For example, amino and organofunctional silane treatments can form chemical reactions on the surface of kaolin, which can then crosslink with polymer systems to improve the physical and electrical properties of the finished product. Surface modified kaolin is widely used in industries such as plastics, rubber, coatings and cables, providing products with better mechanical strength, stability and processing performance.
