How Solar Works

In Malaysia, Solar Power is all about saving the environment whilst harnessing the sun to produce a secondary income source in the process. We have put together these easy to understand steps so you can see how solar works.

Step One: The solar PV(Photovoltaic) panels installed on the roof are made of layers of semi-conducting material, which are produced from refined silica. When UV sunlight hits the solar PV module, it creates direct current (DC) electricity.

Step two: The solar inverter then converts the DC power generated by the solar panel into an AC (alternating current), which is now electricity that can be sold to TNB’s grid network.

Step three: The GROSS electricity produced is then exported to a meter whereby it is then sold back to the power grid at a predetermined rate.

Step four: Electricity generated will be calculated monthly and you will receive payment from your power provider (TNB) based on total power generated.

We understand there are a lot of questions you may have about Solar PV Systems and the Feed-in Tariff in Malaysia so we have listed the most common ones in this handy Solar FAQ.  If there is anything else you are unsure about, give us a call on 03 8066 7050!

What size solar system should I get? –

Our solar systems start at 4kW and individuals are capped at a maximum of 12kW per application. However each customer has different needs and investment requirements. We recommend you talk to one of our solar experts who will work closely with you to design a system most suitable to you.

Will I be using the solar energy I generate? -

No, the energy generated will be sold back to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) at a very high tariff rate. (Up to 4x of what you are currently paying for your electricity!) This means you continue consume energy from TNB as per normal.

Your meters will be read at the end of each month - the first meter reading bill’s you for energy consumed and the second reading invoice’s TNB be for energy produced by your PV system.

Can I install solar on a flat roof? –

Yes, Solar Naturally can install a solar panel system on a flat roof with the use of advanced solar tilt frames.

Where do the solar panels go? –

Ideally in Malaysia, the Solar Panels should be installed on a south facing orientation, however Solar Systems installed on roofs that facing North, East & West can still achieve high irradiance capturing levels. Systems can be also split over multiple areas of the roof with our advanced  solar inverters. Your solar specialist will go through this with you upon signup.

Will a solar PV system work in conjunction with my hot water system?

No, a solar PV system does not work in conjunction with a solar hot water system. A solar panels system will only produce electricity for use by electrical items.

What will happen during a power blackout?

In an event of a power blackout, your solar PV system will stop producing electricity. This mandatory safety measure is imposed to protect anyone working on the blacked out grid system. As soon as power is reinstated the ability to generate electricity will be restored. (You may need to reset the circuit breaker)

What happens during cloudy days?

Performance of PV modules is affected by cloud cover, but our solar modules are designed to work well in low light. If the PV modules do not generate enough electricity for your usage it will then draw from the electricity grid.

How long does it take for a FiT application to be processed?

Assuming all documents are submitted in order, FiT applicants can expect a response within 2-4 weeks.

Is the Feed-in Tariff income a taxable income?

Yes, the Feed-in Tariff income is subject to tax.

Are the FiT rates given to me at the time of my RE Power Purchase Agreement guaranteed?

Yes, your FiT rate for every kWh generated is fixed for a period of 21 years.

What will happen if  I decide to sell or shift to another house? Can the signed RE power purchase agreement and FiA be transferred to the new owner?

With SEDA’s consent, your RE power purchase agreement and FiA will be transferred to the new registered owner of the house. The new owner will continue with the rates established by the original FiAH.  A new agreement is not required.
